“If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa.”
Two of my passions in life are flying helicopters and exploring the great outdoors. My wife and I married in 2012 and we chose South Africa for our honeymoon. This would be the first time both of us had step foot on the African continent.
We landed at Cape Town International, got a taxi to our hotel, unpacked as fast as possible and rushed up to the summit of table mountain to catch the sunset. Wow. Our minds were blown with the majestic beauty before our eyes. Looking down and seeing the vast Atlantic ocean meeting the Indian ocean rolling up against the dramatic, rugged coast that surrounds the Cape, we were hooked.
After an amazing two week trip exploring South Africa, Namibia and Botswana we returned to London. At the time my wife was a genitourinary medicine registrar at St Thomas Hospital taking care of a lot of HIV patients. She discovered the opportunity to take 6 months out of her training and volunteer her services in Botswana with the Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership. We spent 6 amazing months living in Gaborone, Botswana and made some great friends who we still keep in contact with today 10 years later.
As an entrepreneur I've always been interested in business and I quickly became aware of the enormous commercial opportunity that Africa had and the potential for growth. I've been lucky enough to explore opportunities on the ground in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. An experience I will never forget.
